Volunteer Opportunities
The support and education Welcome Baby provides Durham County families each year would not be possible without its team of volunteers. From one-time activities to ongoing projects, Welcome Baby needs volunteers to enhance the services it provides. Bilingual (Spanish/English) volunteers are especially needed. If you are interested in any of the volunteer opportunities listed below or have any questions about volunteering, please contact Von Brown, Welcome Baby's Volunteer Coordinator at (919) 560-7340 or vdbrown@durhamcountync.gov.
Giving Closet Helpers are needed to sort and hang clothing for its free clothing closet. Volunteer hours are flexible. This volunteer opportunity is great for a church, civic or fraternal group, as well as for individual volunteers.
Office Assistants are important to the work that Welcome Baby does. Volunteers are needed to perform clerical tasks and help with mailings. Hours are flexible.
Parent Supporters make weekly calls to families who have requested this peer support. They provide a listening ear and information on local resources to families from home at their convenience. Volunteers must attend three training sessions.
Child Care Helpers enable parents to attend workshops, classes and "shop" in the Giving Closet. Volunteers provide child care and engage children in play and reading activities for about two hours while their parents are nearby in another room participating in WB offerings.
Telephone Surveyors call families who have utilized Welcome Baby services and ask them to evaluate the program(s) and their participation using a prescribed list of questions, recording their answers. Telephone surveys are conducted twice a year for a month and volunteers are needed to complete 10 to 12 telephone surveys from their home.
If interested in any of these volunteer opportunities, please contact Von Brown at (919) 560-7340 or vdbrown@durhamcountync.gov.
