Motheread Program Overview

Who It's For

Motheread is open to Durham County families with children from infancy to age five who want to improve literacy, build stronger family bonds, and encourage a love of reading at home.

The program is especially helpful for parents who:

  • Want to build reading confidence
  • Are looking for new ways to connect with their children
  • Wish to prepare their children for school success

Why It Matters

When parents read confidently, children learn to love reading too. Motheread gives families the skills and support to make storytime a powerful part of everyday life — improving language development, school readiness, and emotional connection.

By combining reading and parenting education, Motheread helps create stronger families and a lifelong foundation for learning.

What You’ll Learn

Through stories and group discussion, participants explore topics such as:

  • Reading aloud effectively and expressively
  • Building children’s vocabulary and comprehension skills
  • Using books to talk about feelings, friendships, and life lessons
  • Turning reading into a positive daily habit
  • Strengthening communication and bonding through storytelling

What to Expect

  • 10-week series with two-hour, in-person sessions
  • Small group format focused on discussion and shared learning
  • Evidence-based curriculum blending literacy and parenting education
  • Led by certified facilitators in a welcoming, supportive environment
  • Free for all Durham County families

Motheread is led by trained Parent Educators from Welcome Baby who specialize in early childhood development and literacy. Facilitators guide families through reading activities and group discussions, offering practical tips and encouragement along the way.
