The Giving Closet
The Giving Closet (also known as La Ropa Gratis) is a free family resource that provides essential items such as clothing, diapers, baby gear, and maternity supplies to Durham County families.
This community-supported program helps relieve financial stress while ensuring that parents have what they need to care for their children safely and comfortably. Every item in the Giving Closet is donated by generous community members and goes directly to families.
The Giving Closet Overview
Who It’s For
The Giving Closet serves Durham County residents who are:
- Pregnant (beginning at the 4th month)
- Parents or caregivers of children ages 0–5 years old
- Residents must verify Durham County residency once a year
Families may visit the Giving Closet once every other month by appointment only.
Why It Matters
Raising young children can be both joyful and challenging, especially when resources are limited. The Giving Closet offers comfort, dignity, and relief by meeting families’ basic needs while connecting them with parenting support, safety education, and community resources.

What You’ll Find
Items are distributed based on community donations and inventory availability. Families can receive:
- Baby and children’s clothing (sizes preemie through 8)
- Diapers, wipes, and baby toiletries
- Breastfeeding supplies and accessories
- Maternity clothing and infant gear such as strollers, highchairs, or bathtubs
- Occasionally other childcare essentials depending on availability

How It Works
- Schedule an appointment below and our staff will contact you with available dates.
- Visit Welcome Baby at 721 Foster Street to pick up your items.
